Iceland – Family buggy adventure in the South
Traveling through South Iceland, you’ll quickly find yourself in a landscape that seems to come straight from another universe. On the south coast, between the towns of Skógar and Vík í Mýrdal, lies the impressive Sólheimajökull glacier. This arm of the glacier is part of the gigantic Mýrdalsjökull, which still conceals an active volcano beneath its thick layer of ice. This area is the departure point for Icelandia’s Family Buggy Experience: a family-friendly adventure that combines action with nature experiences.

Starting point: Mýrdalsjökull Base Camp
Our tour begins at Icelandia‘s Mýrdalsjökull Base Camp, where we’ll be introduced to the buggies and given a brief introduction. The vehicles look robust and sturdy, yet they drive surprisingly smoothly. With helmets and gloves on, ready for a bit of mud and wind, it’s time to climb aboard. As soon as we set off, you immediately feel the freedom: the open air, the mountains in the distance, and the rugged path ahead.

Across black sand plains and rugged terrain
The buggies soon take us onto the vast black sand plains so characteristic of this part of Iceland. Here, you truly grasp how the volcanic forces have shaped the land: the landscape is barren, untouched, and seemingly endless. Small rivers and hills make the ride extra exciting and keep you constantly alert. It feels like you’re in the middle of a nature documentary, but with a healthy dose of action.

A stop at the Sólheimasandur plane wreck
An unexpected highlight along the ocean is the stop at the famous Sólheimasandur plane wreck. This American military aircraft crashed on the beach and has lain abandoned ever since. The rusty fuselage stands out sharply against the black sand, giving the place a mysterious atmosphere. Here, we briefly get out of the buggy to look around and take photos. It’s a photogenic spot, but also a reminder of how rugged and unforgiving this landscape can be.

View of Sólheimajökull and Eyjafjallajökull
As we drive further, the Sólheimajökull glacier looms ever more clearly. The contrast between the glistening ice and the dark ash that has fallen over the centuries makes this a magical place. On a clear day, you can even see the famous Eyjafjallajökull in the distance, the volcano that made headlines worldwide in 2010 with its ash cloud. It feels almost surreal to drive among such natural giants. Weather not working? Icelandia offers an alternative. You can opt for a ride through a hidden canyon, but beware of wet feet!

More adventures with Icelandia
After two hours, we return to base camp, muddy but with broad smiles. The Family Buggy Experience is ideal for families or groups of friends who want to combine action and nature. And this is just one of the many tours Icelandia offers. From glacier hikes and ice cave tours to Northern Lights excursions and day trips to waterfalls and hot springs: the selection is vast, and there’s something for every traveler. One thing is certain: anyone who travels with Icelandia will experience Iceland up close and personal, and it will be unforgettable.
