Italy – The charm of Roter Hahn
Roter Hahn proves that a holiday can be much more than just a stay at a beautiful destination. The South Tyrolean quality label unites approximately 1,650 authentic farms, apple orchards, and wine estates spread across the beautiful mountain region in Northern Italy. Those who choose a holiday through Roter Hahn opt for a unique combination of nature, hospitality, and local traditions. Moreover, the label places a strong emphasis on sustainability, with a focus on regional products, agricultural crafts, and rural life.

The concept behind Roter Hahn revolves around agritourism in its purest form. Guests stay at small-scale holiday farms where they can experience daily farm life up close. From feeding animals to tasting homemade products: authenticity is central everywhere. In addition, Roter Hahn guides travelers to charming farm shops, cozy farm cafés, and producers who uphold the culinary richness of South Tyrol.

During our exploration, we met several special addresses that perfectly illustrate what Roter Hahn stands for. One of these is Moarhof in Molten, an idyllically situated farm overlooking the rolling landscape of the Tschögglberg.

The apartments at Moarhof are stylishly furnished and combine traditional South Tyrolean charm with modern amenities. Many natural materials, such as wood, create a warm atmosphere, and the spacious rooms and terraces invite you to fully enjoy the view of the surrounding mountains and meadows. It is a place where you immediately slow down and leave daily life behind for a while.

Animal lovers will also feel right at home here. Various animals live on the farm, contributing to the lively atmosphere of the yard. Children can get acquainted with farm life and have hours of fun among the animals. Just think of cows, horses, chickens, rabbits… Thanks to a guided tour of the farm, you will truly get to know country life.

One of the highlights of a stay at Moarhof is undoubtedly the breakfast. Every morning, an extensive buffet is ready featuring fresh and local products from the region. Think of homemade jams, fresh bread, local cheeses, cured meats, and other South Tyrolean specialties. Furthermore, beautiful hikes depart from the farm, including the trek to the famous Knottnkino, a natural viewpoint offering spectacular panoramas. The hike to the mysterious Stoanernen Mandln, the stone men on the mountain ridge, is also highly recommended.

Another special Roter Hahn destination is Planitzer in Montan. This charming farm is situated right amidst the vineyards and orchards of the South Tyrolean lowlands. Its location creates a delightful Mediterranean atmosphere, while the mountains are never far away. Planitzer is particularly known for its excellent restaurant, where regional products and traditional recipes take center stage. Here, you can taste the authentic flavors of South Tyrol in dishes prepared with great care and passion. After a relaxing meal, numerous excursions in the surrounding area beckon. For instance, Lake Kalter, the warmest swimming lake in the Alps, is just a short distance away. The lake is a popular destination for hikers, cyclists, and water sports enthusiasts.

For those who enjoy being active in nature, a hike through the impressive Rastenbach Gorge is highly recommended. The path winds past waterfalls, wooden bridges, steep rock faces, but above all, iron stairs. The trek offers stunning panoramic views along the way. It is one of the most beautiful hikes in the region.

A visit to the Trauttmansdorff Gardens in Meran should certainly not be missed during a stay in South Tyrol. These impressive botanical gardens span no less than twelve hectares and bring together plants from all over the world in a spectacular setting. Thanks to Meran’s mild climate, both Mediterranean and exotic species grow here, ranging from palm trees and cypresses to colorful flowers and rare plants. Walking paths lead visitors past themed gardens, panoramic viewpoints, and soothing water features, while the view of the surrounding mountains surprises time and again.
